About the Herpes Counter

The live herpes case counter was created as a way to illustrate the rapid transmission rate of the genital herpes virus. By using the statistics published by the American Center for Disease Control (CDC), we know that an estimated 1 million new genital herpes cases are occuring in the United States each year. From this we can calculate the following statistical estimates:

  • New cases per day: 2740
  • New cases per hour: 114
  • New cases per minute: 1.9

The counter constantly calculates the current number of estimated cases and updates the statistics in real time. In most browsers, the statistics update automatically every minute. A few browsers will only update when the page is reloaded.
